In this post I am talking about start up bands, which has not existed for long. Musicians normally hope that someone likes and listens to their music. Some of them just hope that their music is so awesome that people will find it. Others see that they have to find the listeners themselves. If a musician is rich she will pay a person who will do that for her, in other words, she will hire a manager or a firm to do this.
Most bands try to find a record company which does all the marketing for them. In the internet era, the flow of music has changed. Bands do not need record companies that much any more. Off course these big companies can still help fast track a musician’s career. But there are certain ways for bands to insource marketing.
In this blog I am using McSoila's music as an example. I will show how various sites work and which are valuable for artists.
When planning marketing efforts, the first thing to do is to create some sort of marketing plan. There are various web sites where you can find rough marketing plans. But in an artist’s case I would say that rough marketing plans might include too much jargon, and some parts of them might be irrelevant.
1. The first thing to do is to find out the true identity of your band. How you would like to be seen, what are your values, is your identity more chillout or rough?
2. When you have defined the identity of your band, you can start thinking what kind of people would like to listen to your music, who would be your main listeners.
3. As you have decided your main listeners, you can start thinking about where these people go and what kind of media they use. This way you can choose the channels where to concentrate your efforts.
Main Channels on the internet.
